Episode 191 - Understanding Dissociative Identity Disorder
Vega Belle is a survivor of childhood abuse who now lives with dissociative identity disorder (DID) and teaches & studies sociology at university in New Zealand. Dissociative identity disorder (formerly referred to as multiple personality disorder) is characterized by a person's identity fragmenting into two or more distinct personality states. The fragmentation occurs as a protective response to abuse. In this podcast, Vega shares what living with DID is like. There is also a seven-minute recorded segment made by one of her alters that is fascinating. Vega also describes some other alters, including two who are advanced spiritually. She considers herself to currently be in an ‘unhealed state’ and wants to help people understand DID. Learning about the experiences of trauma victims is important for our own healing and fosters compassion and understanding for others. No trauma is discussed in the podcast.
NOTE: Kim, Vega's alter who shares during this episode, contacted me recently with this message: "I came out and following the integration of a new memory, I no longer feel like I'm drowning and Vega feels kind of like my ridiculous quirky friend who I share an apartment with. Interesting how things change so quickly."
