Episode 5 - What Is God?
NOTE: This is a very early recording and the quality is not that great. As our group continued to meet, Rev. Carol prepared deeper messages before engaging the community in dialogue. At Episode 140 she converts to an interview format with professionally edited audio recordings.
This week we engage in dialogue on the fundamental question, "What Is God?" God is called by many names, including Spirit, Source and Great Mystery. How we answer this question directs every aspect of our lives.
NOTES:
Scripture:
“God is Spirit.” John 4:24
“Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8
“Behold the kingdom of God is within you.” Luke 12:17
“Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.’” Mark 10:18
Lessons in Truth by H. Emilie Cady:
“God is not a being or person having life, intelligence, love, power; God is that invisible, intangible, but very real, something we call life. God is perfect love and infinite power; God is the total of these, the total of all good, whether manifested or unexpressed.”
“Not simply that God has power, but God is power. In other words, all the power there is to do anything is God.”
The Revealing Word by Charles Fillmore:
“God immanent – this refers to the all-pervading and indwelling presence of God, the life and intelligence permeating the universe.”
“Transcendent God – God above or beyond God’s universe, apart from it. God is more than God’s universe; God is prior to and is exalted above it.”
Gandhi:
“God is that indefinable something which we all feel but which we do not know. To me God is Truth and Love, God is ethics and morality. God is fearlessness, God is the source of light and life and yet He is above and beyond all these.”
“…in the midst of death life persists, in the midst of untruth truth persists, in the midst of darkness light persists. Hence I gather that God is Life, Truth, Light. He is Love. He is the Supreme Good.”
Mother Theresa: “My God is called love.”
Dialogue Questions:
What did you learn about God as a child? How have you thought about God for most of your life?
What is your experience of God now?
How does your understanding of God impact or inform the way you live your life?
Affirmation
God is Strength, Love, Comfort, Supply and Source. God is Life and the Guidance that Lights my path. Wherever I am, God is. And I am totally at Peace.
